SYNTHESIS AND FUNCTION OF QUEUOSINE, THE FORGOTTEN MICRONUTRIENT

Abstract. How cells synthesize and use vitamins and micronutrients is a long-standing research problem where many open questions still remain. One micronutrient that is not well known is queuine, the precursor of the wobble base tRNA modification Queuosine. Over the last twenty years, using a combination of comparative genomic, genetic, biochemical and structural approach, we have deciphered many of the missing enzymes in the Queuosine synthesis and salvage pathways in all kingdoms of life allowing to address the question of its physiological function from bacteria to man.
